WHAT’S AT STAKE:
Players to watch:
Patrick Flavin- The former Miami of Ohio standout is my “best players without status” (KFT or PGA). Over the winter, Flavin won on the Asher Tour. He played in a total of nine Asher events during the offseason, finishing in the top 11 in five of those events. Last season, he began without status on the Americas Tour but Monday’d into the first event and finished T7. That helped him earn status and he finished 33rd in points at the end of season.
Hazen Newman- The Las Vegas native and former Oklahoma State team member is in his first year as a pro. The lefty advanced through Pre-Q and First Stage before falling just short at Second Stage. Newman has been coached by PGA Tour veteran Bob May since the fifth grade. I spoke with Newman on Wednesday night and he said the biggest thing he was working on was getting the most out of rounds when he doesn’t have his best stuff. “Turning 74’s into 70’s means making cuts, and that is important out here.”
Max Moldovan- The former Ohio State star has played in the last two U.S. Open’s and had one of the most decorated careers in Buckeye history. In three consecutive seasons in Columbus he set the record for scoring average. His transition into pro golf has been bumpy. Moldovan made just one of nine cuts last season on the Americas Tour. However, there were some signs he is returning to form in the few mini-tour and Monday qualifiers he has played in since the end of last year's Americas season. There is no disputing his talent, so it will be very interesting to see his progress.
Spencer Cross- In his Senior season at the University of Tennessee, Cross averaged 69.93 to cap a great career in Knoxville. Last year, Cross Monday qualified for his first PGA Tour event at the ISCO Championship and was near the lead after a second round 65. He played solid on the weekend and finished T25. Earlier in 2024 he finished T32 at the Knoxville KFT event. He now starts his first season on the Americas Tour.
Jake Staiano- The 28-year-old has status on a PGA sanctioned tour for the first time since his suspension late in 2023. The former Colorado State standout was suspended for six months after betting a total of $126 on “The Match” between Brooks Koepka and Bryson Deschambeau. The suspension ran through Q school in 2023, so last season he was forced to play Monday qualifiers and mini-tour events. Prior to his suspension, Staiano made five of eight cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour.
