A Monday Qualifier with Cheerleaders From Outer Space

Wes Homan has Monday qualified for so many events he’s lost count. The Korn Ferry Tour member thinks the number is somewhere in the “medium to high teens.” The 40-year-old and father of three made it to the final stage of Q school last year, and has played seven KFT events this season. Often though, Homan shoots his lowest scores in Monday qualifiers. 

“I like the mentality that the qualifier puts on you,” Homan says. “If there’s a tough par-5 shot or a tough drive, you just have to hit it. In a regular tournament you don’t always have to. I probably do 50 percent of the time. But I wish I could take a little bit of the ‘you have to do it’ mentality into regular tournaments.”

Between 2015 and 2017, Homan struggled with his game and began pursuing other interests. He and business partner Chris Bergman launched an app called ChoreMonster with Disney. The app, which helped make chores more fun for kids, wasn’t an overwhelming success but the team was encouraged. Bergman wanted to expand the team’s capabilities and sat down with Homan to pitch a video game. 

“Chris started off and said there’s never been a beat-’em-up game targeted at females and of how many gamers there are out there, it's incredible how many are female. He said ‘I want to make a game for the girls’ – and he has two sons – ‘but that the boys want to play.’ It’s going to be fun for everyone.”

Homan believed in Bergman and decided to support him. That was four years ago. Now they’re unveiling RA RA BOOM. 

Publisher Midwest Games describes RA RA BOOM as “an eye-catching, distinctive fast-paced four-player co-op beat ‘em up driven by a meaningful and emotional coming-of-age narrative about a group of ninja cheerleaders from space in a fight to save the rest of humanity on Earth.”

“It’s about ninja cheerleaders from outer space coming to take the world back from the AI,” says Homan. “It definitely has a saga storyline that people can get involved in.” Homan has been using his entrepreneurial energy and past business experience to help get the game over the finish line.

“We’re lucky and fortunate,” says Homan, who is based in Cincinnati. “Miami University has a great game development part of their school, and there’s really no video game development anywhere in the Midwest. So we’re really picking some of their best people.”

Homan describes the development team as the real heroes, and they hope RA RA BOOM will be on store shelves this fall. The team is adding the finishing touches as they finalize distribution specifics with gaming platforms and their publisher. The game has received high praise from trade shows and game testers, and Homan is excited to see the gaming world’s response. 

“At home I just have an office with my Dad and we pretty much manage everything out of there. So a lot of it is phone calls, zoom, team meetings. So I can do it on the road, which is good. But I think Chris is getting a little tired of me buzzing in and saying ‘I tee off in an hour and I can’t do it today.'”

Homan will continue chasing the PGA Tour – but now with badass cheerleaders from outer space.
